Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How are teams formed?
A: Participants are placed on teams by school on a first-come first-served basis. Occasionally teams fill up before the registration period has ended, therefore it is recommended that you sign up early.
Q: If a school team is full will my child still get to play?
A: Yes, but he or she will most likely be grouped with children from a nearby school.
Q: My child is in pre-school, is it necessary to give you his/her school name?
A: When assigning teams, it is very helpful if you give us the name of the elementary school where your child will attend kindergarten. This is a good way for families to connect with others in their area.
Q: Can I request a particular teammate and/or coach?
A: Sometimes. Requests are considered, however are only guaranteed in the case of siblings.
Q: When do we get our shirts?
A: Shirts will be delivered to the field/gym on the first scheduled game. Your coach will hand them out. Coaches do NOT need to pick up shirts at the YMCA.
Q: When will I find out what team my child is on?
A: Teams are formed after the registration period has ended. Shortly thereafter, coaches will receive the rosters at the coaches meeting. You should hear from your coach soon afterwards.
Q: I signed my child up a month ago. I see the season has started, but we have not had a call from our coach. What do I do?
A: By all means, call us at the YMCA (442-9622). We will work to get your child on the appropriate team as soon as possible. Occasionally, a name does not make it onto a roster or for some reason does not get saved in our system. Sometimes phone numbers change, get disconnected, or we simply mis-read the number.
Q: I requested a team that does not practice on Wednesdays, but my child was placed on a team that practices every Wednesday. How did this happen?
A: Teams are assigned before the coaches have had an opportunity to pick the practice time/day that works best for their schedule. Therefore, we cannot honor your request at the time of registration. It is helpful to discuss your schedule with the coach ASAP. It may be possible for the team to switch practice times. Or you can call the YMCA and we will help you find a new team that meets your needs. The best way to avoid any schedule conflicts is to be a volunteer coach!! That way, you decide when and where the team will practice!
Q: Why are basketball practices scheduled so late in the evening?
A: Many elementary schools in the area provide after-school care until 6:00 PM and the gyms are not available until after that time. In order to accommodate the volume of participants in our basketball league some practices begin as late as 7:30. We always try to schedule the youngest players at the earliest possible practice times.
Q: Why don’t you keep score?
A: Our programs are designed for very young participants who in many cases are not developmentally ready for competitive athletics. The participants in our programs are out there to have fun and learn new skills without the pressure that competition adds. Removing the scoreboard ensures that our motto “Everyone Plays at the YMCA” will be upheld. Once children have had the opportunity to hone their skills and gain confidence in their ability, then we feel it is appropriate to allow competitive play. Our 5th grade Basketball & Volleyball programs for boys and girls do allow scorekeeping, however we do not keep league standings. |
