HISTORY OF THE YMCA

The Helena Family YMCA is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the spirit, mind, and body of persons of all ages and economic levels. This mission allows us to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities. The Helena Family YMCA accomplishes these goals by providing a safe and nurturing environment.

The Helena Family YMCA offers programs in aquatics, childcare, fitness, youth sports, and camp. With recent expansions and remodeling, the YMCA has increased opportunities in each of these areas for current and future members.

Aquatic programs such as mommy & me classes, swim lessons, scuba, water aerobic exercise, lap swim and recreational swimming provide many opportunities for our members to enjoy our 5 lane, 25-yard swimming pool. A new Hot Tub and remodeled Dry Sauna also offer alternative healthy activities for members to relax and enjoy their time at the YMCA.

The YMCA is the nation's largest provider of before and after school child care. In the state of Montana, the YMCA serves nearly 5,000 youth in communities such as Billings, Missoula, Helena, Butte, and Dillon. At the Helena Family YMCA, we offer after school care in East Helena for nearly 40 children per month. Our summer day camp program takes 30-40 campers per week to adventures such as the Lewis & Clark caves, the Natural History Museum, the Missouri Headwaters, and other Montana natural areas. Kids Night Out is a monthly event where parents can drop their children off for an overnight of games, swimming, and movies. the YMCA also offers on-site Drop-in Care for children 6 months to 12 years old, while their parents work-out.

The YMCA was the first organization in the United States to offer organized fitness classes. At the Helena Family YMCA, over 40 classes are offered per week for teens, adults, and seniors. Classes such as PIYO, Turbo Kick, Salsa Dancing, Step Aerobics, and Yoga are available to members and mon-members alike. Personal fitness training and on-going instruction are offered to members of the YMCA. A new Aerobic Center, added to the YMCA in 2004, provides a fun and healthy environment for people of all ages to get fit and feel good about themselves. Along with that, the YMCA also offers two fitness centers complete with cardiovascular machinery, free weights, and stretching areas.

Youth Sports in the Helena Family YMCA's largest youth program. Sports ranging from Basketball, Floor Hickey, Soccer, and T-Ball allow the YMCA to convey its mission of enriching the spirit, mind, and body in non-competitive atmospheres. YMCA Youth Sports teach our youth values such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and fair play. In 2002, the YMCA expanded its sports programs to include intramural activities for middle school students. These activities include Basketball, Volleyball, Cross Country, Tennis, Track, and Golf. The YMCA also offers organized adult sports leagues.
